Are you working from home or back in office? Many of us, who have been working remotely for nearly a year, have a less than ideal work-from-home setup. This can often times be true for our office setting as well. Finding the right office chair is an important factor in both scenarios. Here at Workplace, our goal is to help you find the perfect fit when it comes to ergonomic chairs.

We spend one third of our life at work, and for most of us a majority of our work day is spent in a chair, making it the piece of furniture we rely on most. There are many factors to consider when searching for the right chair; comfort, support, adjustability, size and height, aesthetic, and of course cost. Most importantly investing in the right chair is an investment in your health. Studies show prolonged sedentary behavior can be harmful to our health and that a comfortable ergonomic chair can lead to an increase in blood flow, benefiting a person’s productivity and well-being. The right chair should promote healthy postures and comfortable pressure distributions and be designed to support “active” sitting.

Workplace has some tips to follow when searching for the right chair. Your seat height should allow your feet to be firmly on the floor with knees bent to 85-110 degrees, and hips at or slightly above knee level. Your seat depth should allow 2-3 inches of clearance between the front edge of the seat and the back of the knees. This will ensure that your legs are properly supported, without impinging blood supply to the lower legs. The recline tension of your chair should be at a level that is high enough to support your back, while still allowing for a comfortable recline. Armrest height and width should be adjusted to a position that supports the forearms and allows the shoulders to remain relaxed.
