Currituck Outer Banks Evacuation in Progress

September 2, 2010 1:00 p.m.

 

Currituck County government is receiving reports of heavy traffic on the beach road in the 4-wheel drive section and on NC 12 through Corolla, and through Duck and Southern Shores in Dare County en route to Highway 158.

Motorists are asked to be patient as they work their way onto 158 at Southern Shores. NC Department of Transportation and the NC Highway Patrol, as well as local law enforcement, have officials in the area to help improve the flow of traffic. Motorists should follow all normal traffic laws and the directives of law enforcement in the area.

Additional updates:

  • Currituck County government offices will be closed on Friday, Sept. 3;
  • Currituck County schools will be closed on Friday, Sept. 3
  • All Parks & Recreation events for Friday, Sept. 3 are canceled.

Currituck Elevates State of Readiness

September 2, 2010 10:30 a.m.

 

Currituck County government is operating in a heightened state of readiness from its Emergency Operations Center and advises all citizens to finalize preparations for Hurricane Earl.

Actions taken by Currituck County government:

  • Emergency Control Group conducted a 6 a.m. conference call with the National Weather Service, state and local officials;
  • A State of Emergency was declared at 8 a.m.;
  • A Mandatory Evacuation was ordered at 8:30 a.m. for all visitors on the Currituck Outer Banks;
  • Alcohol sales in the county have been suspended;
  • Emergency Medical Services and the Sheriff’s Office have increased staffing at all stations throughout county, and have additional call-in personnel on stand-by;
  • All fire stations are manned and ready for response;
  • Supplies of water have been allocated and received from the state Office of Emergency Management;
  • Mobile communication equipment has been allocated and received from the state Office of Emergency Management;
  • A Twitter feed has been initiated to provide instant updates on Hurricane Earl, accessible at www.CurrituckGovernment.com;
  • The Reverse 911 system has been implemented to advise visitors of the Mandatory Evacuation on the Currituck Outer Banks;
  • All county vehicles and generators have been fully fueled and ready for use;
  • The Currituck Animal Shelter, in coordination with Currituck Animal Control, have an emergency plan in place and ready to initiate for shelter animals;

SAFETY TIPS FOR CITIZENS:

  • Have an emergency safety kit, including food, water, clothes, cash, radio, batteries, flash lights, medicines and pet supplies to last at least three (3) days;
  • Secure outdoor items, trailer boats if possible, and bring pets inside overnight;
  • Fuel vehicles in advance of evacuation;
  • If evacuating, follow directives on law enforcement on roadways and proceed with caution
  • For emergencies, call 911. The Currituck Communications Center will be manned throughout Hurricane Earl.

Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon This September

Mark your calendars for the Currituck Chamber's Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Luncheon on Thursday, September 23rd.  The Annual Meeting is an opportunity for our members to come together and hear a review of the previous year's accomplishments and goals for the coming year.  We will also share the results of our Member Benefit Survey, outline some new and/or improved services being offered as a result of that survey, and introducing our Board of Directors for the 2010-2011 year.  More details will follow on this meeting.

Following the Annual Meeting is the 2010 Small Business of the Year Awards Luncheon, where the Chamber will honor small businesses and their contributions to this community.  Plan to join us for both events this year!
